The short answer
Free Gmail does not have read receipts. There’s no checkbox in the compose window and no setting to turn on. The feature exists only on certain paid Google Workspace plans — and even there, an admin has to enable it and the recipient is asked to confirm, which they can decline. If you’re on a personal @gmail.com address, it simply isn’t available.
What Gmail actually offers
- Free @gmail.com: no read receipts at all.
- Google Workspace (business/education): read receipts are possible, but only if the administrator has turned them on, and the recipient can still decline the request.
So even in the best case, a declined receipt tells you nothing — you’re back to guessing whether your email was seen.
Why Gmail has no reliable native receipt
Traditional read receipts come from corporate mail systems like Microsoft Exchange, where sender and recipient sit inside one managed environment. Consumer webmail — Gmail, Yahoo Mail, free Outlook.com — was never built that way, so none of them ship a receipt that just works. It’s the same story as Yahoo Mail and Outlook.com.
The reliable way: add read receipts with a tracker
A read-receipt tracker adds an invisible pixel to your outgoing email. When the recipient opens the message, the tracker records it and shows you — without the recipient seeing anything or being asked to approve a receipt. Vidi shows the status as WhatsApp-style ticks:
- One grey tick — your email has been sent.
- Two green ticks — the recipient has opened it.
For the full setup, see the read receipts for Gmail page.
Does it work honestly?
Vidi only turns the tick green on a genuine human open. Automated pre-fetches — such as Apple Mail Privacy Protection — are recorded but labelled honestly rather than faked as a real read, so a green tick means what you think it means. More in Apple Mail Privacy Protection and open tracking.
Bottom line
Free Gmail won’t tell you when your email is read — but a tracker will, and setup takes about two minutes. If your important email lives in Gmail, the fastest fix is to get started with Vidi and send your next message with the ticks switched on.
