Why your Gmail read receipt says “not available”

You went looking for the read-receipt option in Gmail and it was not there, or it was greyed out, or it simply never sent one back. You are not doing anything wrong. Gmail read receipts are far more limited than most people expect. Here is exactly why, and what actually works instead.

The short answer

Gmail read receipts only exist on Google Workspace (the paid, business version), and only when an administrator has switched them on. Personal @gmail.com accounts have no read-receipt feature at all, which is why the option is missing. Even where it is available, the recipient is asked to confirm and can say no.

Why the option is not there

Account typeRead receipts?Why
Personal Gmail (@gmail.com)NoFeature does not exist on personal accounts
Workspace, admin has not enabled itNoTurned off at the organisation level
Workspace, admin enabled itRequest onlyRecipient is prompted and can decline

Even when it works, it usually does not

The Workspace read receipt is a request, not a measurement. Your recipient sees a pop-up asking whether to tell you they read your email, and most people click no. Send to anyone outside Google (a Yahoo or Outlook user, say) and the request often returns nothing at all. So the one moment you actually want an answer is the moment you are least likely to get one.

The reliable fix: a read-receipt tracker

A tracker does not ask permission. It adds a tiny invisible image to your email, and when the message is opened it records the open and tells you. Vidi works on both personal Gmail and Workspace, and shows the status as ticks you already understand from WhatsApp:

It also turns the tick green only on a genuine human open, not an automated pre-fetch, so you are not misled (see how Apple Mail Privacy Protection is handled). And the same extension covers Outlook.com and Yahoo Mail, so switching inbox does not mean losing your receipts.

Bottom line

If Gmail says read receipts are not available, it is not a bug you can fix in settings. The feature is Workspace-only, admin-gated, and declinable even then. To actually know your email was read, use a silent tracker. You can get started with Vidi or see it first in the interactive demo. For the full picture, read how to know if someone read your email.

Know when your Gmail is read, on any account

Vidi turns every important email into a clear grey-tick / green-tick answer — across Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Outlook.
